On the shimano- the best out of that lot is Deore- but Still not very high up on the Grade stakes.

BUT is all the bike Deore? You normally find that the main part you can see is the high spec. part- such as the rear derailler. Front derailler and crankset could be something completely different. And the shifters could be a shimano part with a number that does not correspond to anything I understand.

But within Shimano--I would go Tourney--Altus--Alivio-Deore. Alivio and Deore are not bad- The rest and you would be upgrading in a short space of time. But saying that- I have 12 year old bikes that are running Altus and they still work OK. Probably because they are not used much. And MY XT equipped MTB has an Acera front mech. Could not see the sense of going that low on front mech but after 9 years- it still has not been upgraded and still works fine.
