It should work fine.

The nasty little secret about front derailleurs is that they are very low tech. Hell... you could get rid of your front derailleur and shift from chainring to chainring by nudging the chain with a stick if you wanted to. They can work fine as long as the chain is narrow enough to pass through without rubbing the cage.

The only problematic case that I can think of is if you use a narrow 10 speed derailleur with a wider chain that leaves little clearance in the cage. Even then it would still prolly work... you'd just have to trim it after every shift.
