I looked it up on cyclingnews.com it was Stage five from Lac de Madine to Besancon- the stage was won by Joroen Blijlevens. THe other guy was Gilles Bouvard; there was a huge pileup abut 70km from the finish and somehow he and lance almost came to blows. THat year was a crash fest- a huge crash in lac de madine took out a few, including Laurent Brochard. Jan Svorada bailed in in stage five because he'd also crashed the day before, and Cipollini bailed as well, but he was sick. Servais Knaven and Ivan gotti also bailed. Lance bailed the next day,along with 16 other guys. THe weather was horrendous,so lance assumed he had bronchitis like half the other guys.
