My 2 cents. Down tube shifters are nice, index is great, and bar end seem interesting, but its STI for me from now on. I really, really like having both hands on the bar at all times, right there with the brakes. Can't tell you how many times I almost lost it trying to shift with the down tube shifters.
+1 - used them for years, raced with them, etc, but brifters are so much nicer. Just try riding up out of the saddle on a climb and shifting at the same time without brifters...
