Until you get to the nationals level of competition, if you're running formulas or Zipp, and the wheels are built evenly, it's going to be about other things first, like the bike fit, and the rider's fitness and technique.
I am retired from track...I race mtn bikes primarily now...but I do have several National(Canadian) level athletes on the team I manage/wrench for. I absolutely agree that there are more important things than components from a performance standpoint, bike fit and fitness being chief among them. Just that all things being equal, a bearing performance gain could be a difference maker..especially on our local track..
