I'd rather have a dork disc than have the chain tear out my spokes in the middle of traffic. Granted, you're probably going slow when this would become a problem, but it could be an expensive problem and still possibly dangerous. My derailleur is properly adjusted and I check it routinely. But I still keep the dork disc in place. But to each their own, if you're more concerned about what some elitist Fred may think about you rather than getting yourself mangled, by all means, take it off.
