Truly sorry to read about your loss. Here in Japan we can usually assume that almost any sturdy lock/cable will keep a bike if it's attached to something immovable, although I've had bits nicked off the machine over the years. I've already assumed that if and when I repatriate to Canada, I'll never be able to actually leave a decent bike unattended. Here in Sendai we have some public, underground bike parks that are watched over by attendants in person and on camera.
