help with wheelset for early 70's bottecchia giro d'italia

Picked up a really sweet bottecchia giro d'italia frame with original paint and perfect chrome. Have it built up with spare parts for the time being. I'm surprised at how painfully stiff it is vertically. On the up-side, I'm pleasantly surprised with the sporty handling and how stiff it is in the bottom bracket. I'd like to find some rims that complement the frame charactaristics. Right now it has a 27" sun at-18 rim (cheap, stiff, virtually indestructable) on the back and a mavic ma-40 on the front. The back is too hard (and has the fat 1 1/8 tire!), while the front rim seems just about right. I'd like to know what type/size wheels it originally was designed for, and if anyone has suggestions on rims that would give a more forgiving ride.
