Oh yeah, I would get a really decent U-lock!!! Or never let it out of your site!
About the bars, thats all personal preference. I would use what you have for now and see how they feel. Then go to the local bike shop and test out bikes with modern bars to feel the difference. Then you know whatever your decision, you made it based on what was right for you.
