What kind of tear or punture are you trying to repair? As noted above, a small puncture should seal up with some Stans or other product. If it's a big tear I wouldn't even bother. Knowing that you're on good rubber when you're bouncing through that rock garden is worth the cost of a new tire.
I am tiring to be prepared if it does happen. I will be riding desert so cactus will be an issue some times.
