On my Taya chain the 'sigma link", as they call it, is removable. You have to flex the chain with the removable plate on the inside of the radius. The link will pop and the plate will come off.
I should point out that I am not sure the link is supposed to be reused after this. My chain is a single speed 1/8" chain and I haven't had any problems, but somebody else may know if they are really reusable.
