lock nut and brake adjustment

These two contradictory replies about which is the lock nut only give me confidence that I'm not a complete mechanical dummy! I know much depends on the brake model and setup, but I've seen the combination (in one variation or another) on many bikes over the years. So if I understand: the larger lock nut does not need to be moved up against wherever the now-adjusted smaller nut has been positioned (which is more or less what I've been doing for years). Instead, the lock nut LOCKS only when it is up against the brake lever housing. One needs to move it away in order to be able to move/adjust the other nut/barrel, then move it back to the lock position? Makes sense. I'll have to give that a go! Thanks! rcd
