The drawback to keeping the door open is that writing to the standard I now insist on keeping is very demanding. It's work, and it's time consuming. The first draft of the Telegraph article was in December 2001. The final draft was May 2008. I'd rather be riding.

Also, it's not as if there's a lot of financial reward. The Chess Life paycheck was the largest I'd ever received - and one of the few. I've received more certificates from Tom Stormcrowe than checks for writing.
