A friend of mine told me that his son in law has been riding with him some and asked if I would keep an eye out for a 58cm road bike for under $200 for him. I thought I found the perfect one last week when I found a very nice Trek 1400 but the seller thoght it was worth way more than I did. Today my wife and I went to Melbourne to watch our youngest son in a college cross country meet and she wanted to stop at some yard sales on the way home.
We found the bike below at a sale and it was the dirtiest bike I had ever seen for sale. It had some kind of dusty, oily residue all over it and looked awful. I asked how much and the lady said make me an offer. I offerred her twenty dollars and she quickly said ok. My wife said I should have offerred $5. I brought it home and sprayed it down with Gunk engine cleaner and then washed it with a soft brush and then some soap and water. It took me about 15 minutes and it looked much better.
It is a Centurian Sport Dlx with a 6 speed shimano rear derailler, Tange double butted tubing, nice looking lugs, a Sugino 170 aluminum crank, a pretty nice Fuji seat, and some very heavy 700c wheels. It needs tires and cables. It also has nearly horizontal drop outs making it a good candidate for a fixie (if you like that sort of thing).
It should be okay for a starter for my friends son in law except it is only 57cm. I think for $20 it will do him until we can find him something better.
I took if around the block a few times and it really rides smooth like most of those old steel bikes.[IMG]
