to remove a cassette:

1 insert lockring tool into lockring and loosely reinsert skewer to hold in place.

2 apply the whip so you would be turning it clockwise (right)

3 apply wrench to lockring tool and turn counterclockwise to loosen

there were some early (late '80s vintage) cassette hubs that the last cogs screwed on to lock it inbto place. these are very obvious to identify from the lack of a lockring.
