beater road bike crankset problems

I have an 04' road bike that I use as a commuter/beater (as well as several times a week longer fitness rides...30-40 miles). It has an old 8 speed sram cassette and a tru-vative triple that is no longer made. I have thought of upgrading the whole drive train to shimano 105, but in the meantime I need to replace the cranks. The shifters are shimano sora, it says flight deck triple, but the part number is 3300, which according to the shimano website is for doubles.

ok here are the questions.

1. can I use a 9 speed crankset, inspite of the chain size difference?
2. can I use a double without changing the shifters, since I eventually want to upgrade the whole drivetrain?

The lbs and several parts dealers didn't help much. I like the frame, and am having new wheels built, so I don't want a new bike. Thanks for any advice.
