Excellent plan. That's exactly the plan I followed for my first winter. I didn't know if I would actually like riding all winter. I was enthusiastic, but sometimes reality is hard. So I did just studs and fenders on the bike I already had.
As it turned out, I enjoyed cycling all winter, and what I learned that first year went directly to the specifications list I took shopping for my second year. That led me to the Trek Portland.
Had it gone the other way, I'd have had fenders I could use in year 'round, and since I bought good studs instead of cheap, I could have sold them easily.
Good luck!
