Hayes MX 4 disc brake pads jammed

I have had my Giant Yukon since last July, it has stock Hayes MX4 disc brakes. Since last October/November, the rear brakes has always had issues. Started out as loud squeals even when brake is not applied, after several trips to the LBS they figured out that a screw in the brake system was stripped but they only re-threaded it (instead of getting a replacement?!). Now the brake pads will not release after I've squeezed the brakes. I'm taking it to the LBS later today (although I'm out of warranty).

Does anyone know if this is a common issue with the Hayes MX 4? I've been battling brake problems for almost a year, should I upgrade and get a better disc brake system? If so, I've seen lots of recommendations for the Avid BB7's. I mostly ride trails, not very technical (as a representation of my skills: I'm a newbie that brakes a lot and still gets off to walk the bike over one foot tall obstacles and walk up steep climbs).

Thanks for your input!
