Knee pain while cycling

Hi, I once fell off my mountain bike and developed a bad knee pain. Short rides are ok, but when I go for long rides, my knee hurts so badly. My doctor said, there is no fracture or dislocation. I have read in a blog about how physiotherapy can help in such cases. Since there is nothing wrong showing on the x-ray, I am confused whether to opt for therapy? Or will there be a difference if I switch to a normal basic bike. Has anyone had similar experience? Please advise!

Due to 30+ years of martial arts, my knees always hurt. I finally gave in and went to the doc, who diagnosed 3 main issues, not too important for this discussion. They wanted me to try therapy, physical that is, first. I had a great therapist, and my knees are doing much better overall, and I am working them hard. So, my vote is to try it. By the way, I sure hope that they did more than just x-Rays, given the damage is likely soft tissue.

I found myself having pain for no apparent reason in my left knee while cycling. Never did go to the doctor, but started wearing a flexible knee brace, the type with a hole for the kneecap, while riding. A little Google research turned up a likely cause for the pain....pedaling can cause knee pain when strain is placed on knee ligaments, especially if one's pedaling style is less than well-timed or less than well-coordinated (which mine is both.)

Problem solved. With the knee brace, I can ride through the occasional period of knee discomfort without the discomfort progressing to pain.

I rarely need to wear that knee brace anymore, but I keep it in the backpack on my trike, just in case.
