Need a road pedal with float, and ability to twist IN to release.
 

I have been riding eggbeaters for years now. I have finally come to a point where I wanted to go with a road shoe to increase stiffness and reduce weight on my feet. In spite of the walking problems it creates for an amp, the shoes are working out great....the cleat adapters on the other hand, not so much.
I decided to try the Crank Bros Quattro adapter. They broke on my first ride as well as allowing to much side to side wobble and float. They actually released on me several times just from my (good) ankle turning too far, since I am using the standard Eggbeater without the platform the Quattro has to eliminate that issue.

I have tried the SPD pedals, but don't like the release and lack of float. The SL version apparently only allows release turning 'out' with the heel, and I must be able to release in. It appears that the only option left to me is Speedplay. They offer float, release in and out (so far as I can tell), and seem to be easy to get into regardless of pedal orientation unlike the SL. I was looking at the Light Action pedal and wanted to be sure I was not mistaken in thinking it may be the only road pedal that offers all I want.

Speedplay is the only pedal I can think of that releases in both directions, 'Cat, until I read your entire post they are what I was going to suggest. Maybe one of the Mechanics Forum people knows of another pedal that releases in both directions and could steer you in the right direction, you might post the question there, too. Hope you find something that works for you, seems this problem had given you fits for a while now.

I opted for some SPD-SL from Shimano. The Speedplay required a bit of foot movement back and forth to assure they were clipped properly, where the SL just requires in and down. Getting out of the pedal is significantly harder than I like, but I suppose that is the price I have to pay for having a stiffer shoe. There is no way I could unclip from them before needing that foot down but that isn't really a change from before when considering the situations in which the need would arise.
I found that the SL WILL allow release twisting in, which is good for me as I cannot release out at all. It happens to be lucky that the non drive side will allow for that. On the other side I would just be stuck.
