BK Socket Retention
I have been using a pin retention with my sockets. I visited a new prosthetist at a Hanger Clinic and he suggests going to a vacuum retention. Like many, I struggle with perspiration issues in the summer. I was hoping to hear from other BK amps that may have experienced both methods of retention. Plusses and minuses?
I tried it, at the suggestion of my prosthesist. In idea, I would think the system is superior in that you don't have the bottom of your residual being constantly pulled down (or having to hit the button to stop it) after being on your feet, etc. I would guess that for a person with a regularly shaped residual/knee that it might have worked really well. In my particular case my fibula is very prominent due to the breakage and caused an irregularity in the seal. The biggest issue was that it would occasionally just lose seal, burp air, and my leg fell off. I never had that happen with pin retention. For all it's other shortcomings, my leg not falling off is good.
It been just over a month since the stupid moment that left me a below knee amputee. I have been recovering quick and in the next two weeks should get a leg. I really miss my bike, its my escape which sucks for this because I haven't been able to use it for this. I have been bored and reading what I can and thought that vacuum system to be pretty clever; my prosthetist has only been talking about the pin thing though. His attitude has been that we were just gonna do this his way the first go around because he knows better than me (which is true and I accept that) but I wanted to know if anyone had any thoughts on the subject for cycling. From this thread it seems like we will just go with his way at first as there are pros and cons either way. This is how I did my road bike I guess, I just got a khs 220 because that's what my lbs had then as I learned what I wanted made changes. Anyone have any thoughts or advice? Btw I am far too stubborn to let my goof get me down much, it hurt, it sucks, and it doesn't matter. :)
I use a vacuum system for my all day leg and a pin system for my cycling leg. The vac system is bulkier, heavier, and uses more liners/layers which don't flex and bend very well. The vac is more comfortable and supportive though and doesn't experience the constant pulling and pushing on your residual limb that the pin does. The vac is more laborius to put on. In the middle of the night if you have to get up to go pee, the pin system is much faster. Once your pin system is a dedicated cycling leg, you can have your prostehtetist trim the posterior shelf and make the leg less ideal and supportive for walking, but better tuned to your needs on the bike. Believe me, it will take time. You will go through a lot of volume change on your limb and it takes much longer for tissue under the skin to heal completely. Don't rush the process, infections and damage can set you back months even years. I am a little over a year and doing well and cycling quite a bit once again.
