It seems "Better Blocks" in cities include road diets and bike lanes... Gee who'd have thunk that putting bikes into neighborhoods makes those hoods more friendly.

The Better Block team did not just want to show what was possible, but to show how the amenities created were made illegal by city regulations. So they printed all of the ordinances and zoning code provisions they were intentionally violating during the event and put them on display for all to see.

Impressively, it led to the permanent change the project organizers desired, and perhaps faster than anyone expected. “Those ordinances we wanted changed were put on the Dallas City Council docket for discussion and were changed almost immediately to be more reflective of how we live now,” Roberts says. “We also got the bike lane we built added to the city’s bike plan.

While the City of Forth Worth was not a partner in the original project, officials were so impressed by the temporary changes that they moved to make some of the project elements permanent. More specifically, the temporary bike lanes that were added to South Main were part of the city’s bike plan, but had not been implemented because the roadway was under the jurisdiction of the unsympathetic Texas Department of Transportation. The Better Block project highlighted the value and opportunity with a temporary bike lane, which inspired the City to obtain the right-of-way back from the State. A few weeks later the temporary bike lanes were made permanent. As Roberts says, under normal project delivery processes, “You just don’t get bike infrastructure that fast.”
So existing regulations were very automotive centric, but after showing what could be done in these towns, both in changing the driving patterns by modifying the blocks, but also by adding bike lanes, the local citizenry decided that the results were so good they should be made permanent.

Naysayers take note... apparently if you build it, and show the people, they WILL come.

It is a little strange to see such a positive story come out of Dallas.

Especially after all the years of their bicycle coordinator being strictly "no infrastructure." He was apparently an all VC rider who was replaced a few years ago.

Yes. For years, there was one bike lane in Dallas. It was on a bridge over a lake, on my route home. He said his proudest moment was doing away with that bike lane. Made no sense to me, but what do I know?

Props go to Bicycle Friendly Oak Cliff for getting him booted and a more reasonable person hired as the city's bicycle coordinator. Jason Roberts is mentioned in the story. He is one of BFOC's charter members and was heading it up, at that time.

it's bizarre, as dallas is mostly a car-driving town, but i had noticed more and more cyclers - either riding in a pack on the roads or thru the trails. there's definitely been a shift.

As I see it, Dallas was losing it's "best and brightest" to other metropolitan areas, and it's population level was stagnating when compared to other nearby Texas cities. If Dallas's "long horned adorned" Cadillac image was still in vogue, I seriously doubt that any changes on this level would have been made.
