My favorite bike was custom built for me back in 1984. It still fits great. I've changed nearly every component on it over the years... but it is still a friction shifting freewheel bike... built like a truck. So it's 31 years old... and BTW it is steel.
I have bought newer bikes... back in 2007 I bought a Giant off road bike... it works, it's OK, but it's an "index shifter."

My oldest is an 86 Gazelle Champion Mondial. My newest is a 2013 Ridley Excalibur. I suppose I ought to find a Luxembourgian bike to complete the Benelux trifecta.

My oldest bike is my 1980 Schwinn Traveler, I got this new as my first "big-kid bike". We rebuilt it for my daughter when she started college; five years later, it's still her daily commuter:
I wish I had a better picture, but this bike is only at my house in the winter when she uses a winter-beater and lets dad clean up the old Schwinn.

18 years. I built up a Litespeed after I got my first decent paying job. Still fits as well and rides as nice. I have replaced parts as things wore out, which took me from 8 cogs to 9 and then 10.

I still have and occasionally ride my first good road bike, which dates from 1967. OTOH my newest bike, which is the one I currently ride the most dates from 2001.

1989 Reflex ALX Carbon - all original and ridden over 700 miles so far in a year.
1995 Huffy Thunder Ridge - converted to a commuter and it's indestructable.
1988 Huffy Techtra Lite - awesome vintage steel road bike and rides like new.
Wifey's bike.......
2014 Huffy Rival - biggest POS I ever rode or worked on! Huge difference in quality between older American made Huffy and the new garbage from China.

My primary town bike is a '74 Schwinn Hollywood step-through. It was originally my mother's bike and was paired with another Schwinn that my father originally rode that I inherited and which eventually failed. It's got the biggest baskets you've ever seen. My secondary town bike was also originally my mother's, an '84 Stump Jumper. This one is mostly used when I am dragging our huge cart (sheets of plywood, lumber or just Costco runs). For fun rides, I mostly ride a two-year old custom Rodriguez tandem, but when I ride alone my go to bike is an '82 Trek 720. The 720 had a bi-lateral hip replacement a few years back (seat stay replacement; the seat stay/seat tube joint is notoriously weak in those frames).
Sometime in the next couple of years I intend to modify a Trek frame from the mid-70s that's similar to the 720 and set it up with some nice gearing, brakes and either 650B wheels or 26" wheels to take advantage of the superior tires available for those sizes for the rides and terrain that I prefer (long, chip-sealed, gravel or dirt). To complete the oddness, I'll add several carbon bits and make it electronic 11 speed. It would make more sense to just have a frame built up custom, but I've been rolling around on these old Trek steel frames for over half a million miles and I'm stuck in my ways.

you guys should really go buy a new bike with plastic stuff and disc brakes, they are so legit....
I ride steel, one 16 years old, one 39 years old. its a simple machine, the new plasticky versions gross me out. they are not designed at all with feel good aesthetics. they look like nascars

With the advances in BMX even a 1988 model is OLD SCHOOL as well.
In 1988, Huffy was a United States company and producing a lot of bikes. That would stand to reason it was American vintage. Huffy/Huffman dates back to prewar and was an iconic company in the industry.
Even if you dislike them you can be thankful that they are still around when a fine company such as Murray stopped producing bikes, and Rollfast simply died.

A month and a half, just getting back into biking, been about 35 years. Having a blast so far, bike is a Fuji Absolute 2.1, I had the 1.9 disk but turned out to be to big of a frame for me and I kinda like the cleaner look without the disc anyway.
