Fatal accident when bike hit truck

Saw this and thought to share.

Getting close to a moving truck between the wheels is one of the most dreaded thing--avoid at all cost.

According one of the links she may have had unfamiliarity with the rented fixie's brake.

Just this week in Hong Kong:
******************************??? - ????

Rider not wearing a helmet. Head injuries a key factor.

Driver "arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving".

Truck has turned and failed to give way to through street.
Illegally parked small van may have blocked view.

Darn shame. I worry about casual riders on rented equipment. I can't believe the bike was a fixie as reported though, but then again, what kind of a rental bike just has one brake in the front.

This quote from one of the sources makes a whole lot of sense:

They showed that her blood alcohol level was low and that intoxication was the cause of the fatal incident.

I think that was a typo or reporting error, and the intent was that alcohol was NOT a factor.

In any case, Like you I wonder about the wisdom of renting fixed wheel bicycles to novice riders for a number of reasons, even if they have two brakes. Fixie or not, I suspect that this was simply a case of a novice rider on an unfamiliar bike having incredibly bad luck. 99% of the time, this should have resulted in nothing worse than road rash or a sprained wrist.

We (Americans) like to believe we live in a cause and effect world and like to believe there are reasons for accidents, and that they're either preventable (which to an extent they are) or that someone or someone must have done something wrong. However, the world doesn't always work that way, and luck (or whatever you want to call it) plays a major role. We've all had "whew, that was close" moments at various times of our lives, and most of the time that's all they are. But only micro-seconds and millimeters separate those close calls from serious collisions.

This isn't to say that skill, judgement, experience and care don't make a difference, because they do. But luck also plays a role, and we might make a major error with minor consequences or make a minor one with major consequences.
