A thought.... if these cars are being designed as "rule obeying robots" then self driving cars should be ideal road users with which to truly "share the road." Imagine no more speeding, no more close passing and no more annoying honking by impatient motorists.
True vehicular cycling should work very well.

If they could be programmed to not run over objects in front of them, I'll like them.

Even George Jetson gets into traffic jams. As long as the road network is an open model there is no such thing as accident proof, and even then not.
If you read the thread about the 13 year old boy who was struck by a truck then you know that humans and computers won't necessarily mesh well all the time. We're rather predictably random.

At least the cars don't get distracted or sleepy. And they can see 360 degrees.
From last year, watch the google car respond to rider hand signals. Next, it tracks a rider filtering up on the right side bike lane, while continuing to monitor in all directions.

Of course, the cars are still pretty bad in rain and snow, but there's been a lot of progress.

Exactly. And if a computer somehow hits someone, I'm sure it won't run away or try to hide evidence.

While I'm certain they're inevitable, true autonomous vehicles are still a ways off, and it will be a very gradual transition before they represent the norm. I would guess at 50+ years.
