incazzare.
I think part of my problem might actually be the amenities. I'm a middle aged home body. The bars open to 4 is a negative to me...and it's so loud at night! I think I'm too boring for a city that truly does never sleep. The working vibe is different as well...people and clients expect to go out for dinner and drinks together. I'm not a big fan of socializing with work connections. The Philly MYOB attitude is somewhat appealing to me...NYC is a lot more friendly.
Hey, as you know, I'm a middle aged homebody too! And I live in ... Brooklyn. My block is pretty quiet, for the most part. Tree lined. Nice houses and buildings. And less than 6 miles riding (mostly on separated paths and bike lanes) to my office in downtown Manhattan. And I know you know this as well, but remember it's a very diverse city. If you can plan out where you live in relation to where you work, you can have that nice quiet block with a comfortable commute, too. I sure do.

LET'S ROLL
Glad you're not too banged up; OP. Here is a similar route that I did with a local club.
Met up on a Sun.(or was it Sat.?) morning by 1st av. and 60th st. Up the 1st ave. bike
path to Randall's Island then the Bronx. No issues, had a blast actually:

1nterceptor is a member of bikeforums, but I haven't seen him post in this one - just in the General Discussion forum and Commuting forum. One of the latest posts I saw from him stated that he goes mixed-modal with his folding bike when he wants to cut his commute time down to 45 min. I think it was on the "How was your commute today?" thread. He didn't say what subway he takes though.
or PATH train to save time. Usual route on my way home.

Very nicely shot video. Fun to watch. And thank you! A little antibiotic and a wrist brace seem to be doing the trick.
Yes. That was my route early Sunday. Too bad I wasn't with your cadre of riders.
Cheers,
Essex

..... NY scares me a bit. I could see myself in some areas of Queens. I'm sure there are better areas for cycling than what I've ridden...I'm usually in Manhattan and don't know the city well enough to pick better alternatives. Philly is a lot more bikeable IMO. We're also closer to rural and suburban areas (we're smaller, there's less city to get through!) for different riding experiences.......
Bergen county NJ is where you should find a place. Most serious NYC cyclists will cross from Manhattan over the George
Washington bridge and go north to some decent roads and destinations. 9W up Piermont, Nyack and beyond:

Sorry - had to add that HitchBot died in the city of Brotherly Love. The guy bashing the Bot is probably an anarchist.
PS - 100 philly tech companies offered to fix him the next day.
