Bike lane or parking lot?

The bike lane on the other side of the street from me seemed a little occupied by parked cars. Sheesh.

Are there signs or lane markings in the area? Is this normal?

Then 'take the lane', when motorists' do that. They just have cope with it.

Oh yeah, it's clearly marked and this is an area that a lot of cyclists use daily.

I wouldn't bother with a bike lane on a road like that.

Is it misused for parking on a regular basis, or not?

That's not a solution, and it must be pointed out that those who "just have cope with it" aren't the ones causing the issue.

Have you reported it? Seems like a bonus for some towing company, if they have the municipal contract.

What I hate is that it becomes a "Damn cyclists, riding in the road!" issue in cases like this, instead of a "Damn motorists, parking in the bike lane!" issue like it should be...

It's a nice fantasy to imagine having a forklift and moving the cars from one traffic lane to another (left about 12 feet in this case).

Call the police (and your local municipal representative) to issue parking tickets.

My first time riding this route, so I don't know if this is usual or not. The business that these cars belong to is Joe Gibbs Racing. I'm thinking about sending the picture and a nice e-mail to them.

That answers my question. If it was a one time thing such as a funeral or the like it wouldn't be worth worrying about.
Knowing who and why they're parking there is very helpful. A customer I deliver to had a similar issue of inadequate parking and complaints to the company prompted them to lease off site parking and run a shuttle bus.

It's a five minute walk from the police department around the corner.

While they aren't the cause. Cyclists' do have the right to be on the road and not restricted to a bike lane within the city limits of Durham, NC

So, Motorists' have to 'cope with it'.

People on bicycles in North Carolina have the right to be on the road.
People on bicycles in North Carolina also have the right to *choose* to ride in a bike lane. Oh wait, no they don't if people park their cars and trucks in the bike lane.

The NASCAR crowd seems to have "coped" by taking rights away from people on bicycles.

Are you being obtuse, or do you see no difference between solving the issue to everyones benefit, and just expecting one group to "cope" with it.

I simply don't see the point of that comment, or why you made it, as the necessity of riding in the lane whenever there isn't an option present is obvious and lawful.

Bingo. We have a bike lane that gets similarly parked up by scofflaw motorists on a regular basis. I asked a pair of old women who were returning to their illegally parked car if they would please not park in the bike lanes in the future. These two little old women burst into an angry tirade about the cyclists on the sidewalk (actually legal unless otherwise posted, which means it's legal in my 'hood).

Funny thing is, the cyclists who are riding on the sidewalk are doing so because the motorists have been harassing them on the street. Then we get a decent bike lane created and those same motorists steal it and still think they're entitled to do that and complain about the people on bikes. I think we have become just a bit too tribal.

Of course none of this would be an issue if local law enforcement would cite and tow expeditiously.

Care to explain further. If some moronic motorist parks in the bike lane. Those cyclists' that prefer to use the bike lane instead of the travel lane, can use the travel lane momentarily. So motorists' 'have to cope with it' by accepting that a cyclist is in the travel lane.

I am not being obtuse. When motorists' park in the bike lane, motorists' in the travel lane, have to cope with those cyclists who prefer to use the bike lane, being in the travel lane momentarily.

Just ride past the parked cars, centered in the lane to ensure you're out of the door zone. Motorists who wish to pass can use the center turn lane. No big deal. Everyone gets on with their lives, time isn't wasted whining about it.

Is it clearly marked as a bike lane, though? Your photo makes it look like a shoulder.
