I think it's because things are changing. We saw similar reactions in NYC when cycling started to get popular some decades back. It used to be that bicyclists were low in number and so below radar. Pedestrians reserved their hatred and frustrations for car traffic. Then bicycles joined the mix in meaningful numbers and upset the equilibrium. It wasn't long before cyclists became the common denominator of pedestrian/motorist antipathy, hated almost equally by both.

In any case the UK's image of universal politeness is something of a myth. One visit to a major football (soccer) game will convince you of that. Overall, they're still pretty civilized in the UK, but there's a large number of hooligans there, enough that this sort of thing happens fairly frequently.

In the original article(at the same link), it said that he had been chasing her down the street. Prior to what is seen in the video.

While I never went to a 'footbal'(soccer) game, when I lived in London. I did see a cricket match when I lived there. It would be thought that cricket fans are respectable. But, They are almost as bad as soccer fans.

This is from the artical accompanying the video, and matches what is seen in the video.

"Police had been seeking the man following the incident, which was captured by ahelmet camera worn by the woman.
She had asked the man not to cross the road until she had cycled past. In the footage, he is heard shouting and swearing at the cyclist, who is in her early 40s, as he chased her down Sidney Street in Whitechapel, east London.
As she slowed down near a junction, the man, who was wearing dark clothing, approached the cyclist, called her a “mug” and shoved her to the ground. She let out a cry and sounded distressed and injured."

Wow! Reading the linked article the thought that assault, with the potential to cause death or severe bodily injury the charge should be dependent on the injuries to the victim. I think it far surpasses the threshold of Simple Assault. In the States (most) is it immediately elevated from a Misdemeanor to a Felony Assault? Throw the book at the idiot! Give him some hard time and then community service, anger management and lay off the pints or back to hard time.

I already told you, there was previous article at the same link. They put up the update, this yesterday(8\25\2015). Also, Look at the caption underneath the video in the updated article. Read it VERY VERY CLOSELY.

Oddly enough, a bike website in London, still has the original story: https://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/..._medium=Social

Oddly enough, a bike website in London, still has the original story: Watch: Man pushes London cyclist into path of oncoming traffic (video) - Cycling Weekly
"The cyclist is seen riding along the street and asks the man to not cross the road in front of her, saying “please don’t try and knock me off”.
The man subsequently* chases her down the street, swears at her, then says “you want to put your finger up at me, you mug. Come on” and then pushes her into the path of traffic. Police believe the man is in his 40s."

You still didn't read the original article, or the caption on the picture from the original article.

He was the instigator. She was just responding to his behavior.

Chris, not to belabor the issue, but you have the sequence reversed.

The woman encounters him crossing the street, and some words and maybe a hand gesture are exchanged.

Then
he chases her down the street to the next corner where phase 2, more words and the shove, happens. You can see the end of the chase just before the shove near the end of the video.

As far as I or anyone can tell, the crossing encounter was the first, and nothing before that is reported, though from the video it seems that he's just crossing and not looking for her at the time.

I am going on what the paper said. So, The caption on the video, must be fouled up. Take a look at it.

Both the video and caption are what others are telling you. It's just that the caption references what happened after the first encounter when she says "please don't knock me off".

Just take a moment to watch the entire video, which starts with him jaywalking in the distance, and ends with him running up the street and knocking her down. Then read the caption and article and you'll see they jive with what you just saw.

As I was toodling along in a grocery store parking lot this AM (very early, dark- this will probably change now), a thug yelled "Hey homie on your bike!" He was charging me at a dead run, very close. I sped up, looked back to see where he was, turned around just in time to see a curb fast approaching. Hit the brakes but it was too late. Smacked the curb, fell into gravel. Thug returned to his buddies, who were all having a big laugh. Totaled my beloved commuter, bent the frame just behind the headset. Got my shoulder bloodied, thumb jammed (might have to see a Doc for that) and some superficial wounds to my leg. Helmet contacted gravel, am thankful I was wearing it as always.

Brits have no lock on idiotic behavior.

I've read of a number of random attacks on cyclists, I'm going to go out on a limb and surmise that due to lack of media coverage and incident locations it's another version of polar bear hunting or the knockout game. Even paddlers aren't safe, a kayaker on the Kaw River in Kansas city was fired on by someone on a bridge.

All I can really say is be extra careful out there. My radar went off when I saw those guys in a group laughing it up. Thought oh well, just kids having a good time.

As it happens they were truly vicious ****s out looking for a good time. It was like being on the wrong end of "Clockwork Orange". It was a really horrifying experience.

Went for a 43 mile ride after that.(different bike!) Some poster here said that if he were a surfer, sharks wouldn't get him down. He loved his sport. I kept that in my head. Every damn car that went by I was scared of. It was a sweaty, fearful experience. That was the best healing I could do. Observed everything, waved at good people.
