Drunk man fires shots at group of cyclists

Drunk man beats up a fellow, steals his car, then shoots at a group of cyclists. For some reason, the discussion on Facebook pertaining to this event ended up being about how dangerous bicycles were, and how they should be banned from highways. I finally chimed in, noting that this did not happen due to careless drivers or careless cyclist. It was due to a drunk. But didn't seen anyone calling for a ban on liquor.

Bicycles are very dangerous when they take you to places where you get in the way of bullets fired by drunk people.

So, I am supposed to be on the lookout. Specifically for drunks with guns, seriously.

I visited Dallas(not Southfork Ranch) in the 1970's. But I have no wish to live in Texas.

I know people who live in Texas, and more that used to. None of them enjoyed it or want to go back.

Gentlemen:

My daddy was from Texas & he was real piece of work. I've visited kin in Texas, several times. I've testified (as an expert) in court in Texas ((the 'judge' was clearly hostile to the plaintiffs (surviving mom & dad) because they were Mexicans)). I've ridden through Texas (motorcycle on the way to Daytona) --- they don't seem to collect their road-kill & object to not being able to kill rabbits for sport anymore because of a disease. I've watched Texas in the news; near-highest out-of-wedlock birth rate, near-lowest high school graduation rate; advocate creationism in school science classes; rampant racism (everyone should own a Mexican and shoot a n****r). Texas was the last state to free 'their' slaves. Hell, they can't even decide what to do about their diminishing water supply. I don't even want to fly over Texas because the plane might have to land there.

Joe

That's the best description of TX that I have ever seen. I took a job in TX at the end of grad school. I lasted less than a month before I decided that I couldn't in good conscience raise my child in such a racist environment. The hydrocarbon cloud that descends on N. TX in the fall was a deal breaker as well. To their credit, they are mighty nice to white folks. When I walked to the grocery store, people would stop in the middle of the road to ask if I needed some assistance. Apparently no one walks in TX by choice.

About that teen birth rate: Front page news several times during the four weeks I lived there was a proposal by the local school board to begin teaching sex education to high school students (in a county that led the nation in teen pregnancy). This was actually controversial. I felt like I had taken a wrong turn at 1950.

So the comments are about how dangerous cycling is? Did anybody comment about the gun? Maybe it's because the right to cycle isn't in the constitution.

So the FB discussion went to the danger of cycling and this discussion, to one about Texas. One is no better than the other.

The last time I road in Texas was the Texas Stampede 1200 in 2013. That was 750 miles in 88 hours. No issues with Texas drivers whatsoever.

It seems some people simply enjoy searching the web and social media for pointless fear mongering nonsense.

This is not a bicycle safety issue, it's a random criminal act with a firearm that cyclists don't typically encounter. It's not an advocacy and safety issue, it's a news story and a lot of how long some dude should rot behind bars.

A&S is not a judicial body, and such opinions, while expected, are not a objective solution to an unusual problem.

Went to the linked site
-as poster said
drunk steals car
shoots at cyclists
gets arrested
But
on the lower right-
another story
"Woman bites boyfriend's testicles during fight"
Now I didn't check to see if this was the same area-town-county
but if it was I will avoid Sparta Arkansas

Lancashire NW England-where-according to a forum member- drivers offer fashion advice to cyclists-
doesn't look so bad -compared to a slow news day in Sparta Arkansas

I got shot at once riding my bike southbound towards crescent city, CA. It's right next to the CA/OR border. It was this small truck with two dirt bikes on the back. I heard a loud bang right next to my ear, quickly followed by a ricochet in the hill right next to me. I called it in, and of course, the cops couldn't do **** without the plate number. funny how the tax money go into the police force so they can spend the majority of their time writing tickets and shooting the **** over donuts and coffee. anyway, a fellow tourist who stayed with the same warmshowers place said he experienced the same thing going a different direction.
