"no bike rider required medical assistance after the ride"

Impressive.

On the bright side, at -27C ice is not that slippery.

You're clearly a glass half full kind of guy and I get your point -- that wet ice is the worst. Nonetheless, -27C ice is still pretty slippery though there may be less of it as there's no water to make ice. Where I'm from it was mostly a permanent layer of compressed, solidified, rutted snow.

The assumption that ice is pretty slippery at that temperature proved fatal.

Scott's Last Blog, 3rd March, 1912

Minimum friction is at a balmy -5 C.

As did the assumption that horses, woolen jackets and 500 lb sledges would be a good idea when walking to the South Pole.

It was while walking north FROM the South Pole that pretty much everything went, er, south.

You are of course correct. Scott was a bit of a pompous twit. I'm a Shackleton fan myself.

Nonetheless, riding a bike on -27c ice is still a slippery proposition and I recommend studs though very cold ice is hard and that reduces their bite.
