You're clearly a glass half full kind of guy and I get your point -- that wet ice is the worst. Nonetheless, -27C ice is still pretty slippery though there may be less of it as there's no water to make ice. Where I'm from it was mostly a permanent layer of compressed, solidified, rutted snow.

You are of course correct. Scott was a bit of a pompous twit. I'm a Shackleton fan myself.
Nonetheless, riding a bike on -27c ice is still a slippery proposition and I recommend studs though very cold ice is hard and that reduces their bite.
