Rearview mirror
 

I'm looking to get a rearview mirror, any suggestions or advice? I have an endurance bike.

Mine cost me less than $3 on eBay...What kind of bike you have is much less relevant than riding conditions -- ,for example, I commute on a full-suspension Kona, cuz I love the bike.

If you wear glasses I suggest a Take-a-look mirror. It works great for me. I have tried other types of glasses mounted morrors and this one works best for me. They are available at many local bike stores, and of course on line:

I also prefer Velcroing/rubber-banding/zip-tying eyeglass mirrors to my helmet. They can fold-up and tuck-away while fixed in place for protection while not worn.

I use Myracle mirrors on both my flatbar commuting bike and my drop bar road bike. Flatbars accommodate mirrors much better but both work and I would never ride now without a mirror.

Have used Take-A-Look mirrors for more than a few years. Attached to helmet visor. Have used a variety of helmet- or glasses-mounted mirrors for 30+ years.

I don't know why in the picture of it mounted to the helmet they have it pointed up instead of down.

I've tried a bunch of handlebar mirrors and Busch & Muller are by far the best.

Definitely the take-a-look. With just a small turn of the head I can scan a very wide area to my rear. Can't do that with a bar mounted device.

Long. I thought the short would put the mirror closer which would provide a "larger" viewing area, but it was too "big" and blocked too much of my peripheral vision.

I had also tried another brand of a similar design, and it was too big also.

Once, I tried a glass mirror with a plastic-frame. It worked okay but the mirror swiveled too easily. The brass and metal TAL mirror just works. I did notice the older ones had a front-surface mirror, and the new ones have a more conventional rear-surface mirror. In-use I see no difference (litterally) I think the rear-surface mirror is better for cleaning, since you can't rub off the reflactive surface over time like I did with the old front-surface (although it took years to do so.)

Digressions aside, I would be happier with the short-arm TAL mirror over a handle-bar mount, which I still have on each bike for redundancy. Nowadays, with so many cars running daytime lights (and now LED's) I find that the lights will often catch my attention in the handlebar mirror before I see them in the Take-A-Look Mirror. However, for relative viewing size, vibration-free viewing, plus the ability to sweep the view behind you, the TAL is Superior.

Digressed again.

I use the HubBub Cycling helmet mirror, handmade in Ohio by Brian and Diane Jenks (formerly Diane Lees, of The Outspoken Cyclist podcast). It's simple in construction, but is by far the best mirror I have ever used. It's also quite durable. By having the helmet on the mirror means I can wear whatever glasses I want, or no glasses at all if I want to.

I have used lots of different mirrors and all of them have been better than nothing. I still don't have one that is perfect for me. I think you just have to resign yourself to trying several types until you identify what works for you. Bar mounts work better for me than eyeglass or helmet mounts but others have different experiences.

got a take a look this past summer cuz I was doing more road miles w traffic. tried on the helmet. worked fine, but works better on my safety glasses. no pic of that tho

Mine is a scooter mirror attached with a 40 year old bracket, 8 mm nut. Only $20. Completely solid as you would expect. This on a 1974 swept back upright HB on a heavyweight roadster. I never wear a stupid helmet.

I have bar ends on a flat bar bike. Drilled a hole in the bar end to attach, and it works great. Didn't like it attached to end of bar

+1 for the Take A Look mirror, I have one and love it. Been riding with a mirror like that for many years. Take A Look is just the modern evolution of the clip on type mirrors for glasses. Feel naked and vulnerable without it.

I agree, absolutely the best bar-mounted mirrors. They're the most durable I've used, and they stay where they're positioned. I like the big 3" mirror on the 903 variants.

I use and like the Bike-eye frame mounted mirrors. I've never been able to get used to the helmet mounted mirrors.

The only problem with mirrors is forgetting to take a look in them once in a while.

Pro Truck drivers scan the mirrors every 5/6 seconds.

I use the short and like it very much. Can't speak for the longer version because I've never tried one. I have a riding partner with the long version that said it has too much shake/bounce on rougher roads.

I make sure to check mine every so often when riding on the road, but now and then I realize I haven't looked in a while. Of course I always check it before making a left turn or moving over to the left out of habit. The one time I rode without my helmet I was looking up to the left and then realized I didn't have my mirror.
