Regulation of bike tour companies?

A relative of mine had a very bad experience with a bike tour company in California. Does anyone know if these companies are regulated by any local or state agencies? If she wanted to file a complaint, any ideas on where she'd go to do so? Thanks much.

California does regulate travel agents. This would be a place to start.

Thanks. The tour company isn't really a travel agency -- they run local tours for people who are (presumably) already on vacation -- so this may not apply, but I appreciate the start.

Given that it's a business operating in California, file a complaint with the State Attorney General.

the AG will only investigate violation of state statute, not simply 'bad business'. And in any case the AG won't give a hoot; they've got enough time dealing with the overload of petty crimes to ignore any non-flagrant violation of a random state law. But it may make her feel better anyway.

if she was personally harmed (lost money; didn't get what was promised in a contract; was defrauded; was injured due to neglect of the company, etc) then she's got her OWN cause of action, which she could possibly bring in small claims court.

Of course, the best thing is probably to contact the company itself. they may not know how pissed she is and may fix things on their own.

What was the bad experience? I've been thinking of doing one through the Wine Country.

Despite advertising tours for people of all skill levels and having "custom fit bikes," they made no effort to make sure my relative (a completely inexperienced biker) was on a bike that fit her. Naturally, she fell. The tour person told her "it's probably just a bruise" and that she should just ride in the van for the next 2 hours. Turned out to be a broken shoulder, w/my relative having a long, and painful recovery.

Oooookay. Why didn't the bike fit her? If she's completely inexperienced, did she expect to be able to put her feet on the ground while sitting on the seat? What happened that caused her fall?
