Bicycle Registry and Serial Numbers

I can see a real benefit to the bike registry. My bike is cheap by most standards. Bought many years ago for around $300. But it has significant value to me and I'd not want to call my insurance agent in case of a loss. But my bike does not have a manufacture's serial number. Can I still register it at NBR? Also, I do have it registered with the local police. Is that sufficient?

Thanks!

Local laws may differ, but perhaps they will let you engrave or stamp an identifying number and register it in lieu of a manufacturer's serial number.

I have my Klein registered with the National bike registry...They supplied me with a little sticker, I mounted on the bottom side of the top tube...Beginning to wear tho and registry number not super clear...My qestion is would the police search out for this number automatically.

Each juridiction is differant. When you register be sure to record that number for your private records and don't rely on some dumb sticker to help identify your bike. You'll need to mark that NBR number on the bicycle also.

Bike shops *do* watch for stolen bikes. I have the NBR on the actual rim tape with name and phone number. So if the bike comes into a bike shop for a flat repair and my name doesn't match the customer's it can be found there.

More info. Your personal records should also include the bicycle serial number because when my bike got stolen all the cops wanted was that serial number and description.

They said they do *NO searches* it's for ID purposes only. I had to keep checking every local precint every few weeks because they don't network here in the Seattle Metro. Your metro area may be more advanced.
