A group of my friends and I went to the coast yesterday since we all had it off and had an unfortunate run-in with a cyclist. I had been going on and on about how bike-friendly the city of Monterey seemed to be - there were bike lanes and trails and MUPs everywhere, and many many bikes all about.
Me and my friends finished lunch on the wharf and were walking back to our car on one of those paths and I was out front. I turned around and noticed that we were pretty much taking up the whole path, which was very busy due to the holiday. I was just about to ask my group to move over to one side (having experienced people taking up the whole path myself when I ride!) when I heard shouting from behind us. An older man on a mountain bike was yelling at us, saying something along the lines of "Theres two lanes for a reason ... [unintelligible] ... HELLO! HELLO!" We moved over for him and then he slowed down to our speed, moved in closer to us, and as he passed the two girls in the group got in their faces and kept shouting "HELLO HELLO" about 5 or 6 times before passing us and leaving us alone. The guy was almost spitting he was so incensed.
He was going far too fast on the path to be safe. There were tons of people crossing and walking on it, as well as cars and intersections. He didn't have or use a bell or horn.
I called him a freak after he passed.
The two girls he shouted at were especially shaken and upset at the whole thing.
If you are that crazy old man please put down your bike and walk from now on, you give cyclists a bad name. I don't even want to think of how you might act if you drive a car. Perhaps its best you don't even walk anywhere. We might all be better off if you just stayed home and never leave.

Crazy old insane guys!! There's a group that the military's not thinking about, they could recruit them to go "kick ass" in Iraq! I get that old duffer would sign up in a minute, just tell him the Iraquis have no bike-path manners.

So... are you advocating this man's behavior? Should all of us cyclists start harassing pedestrians on MUPS? Or just crazy old men?

As I was passing you, I said "There's two lanes for a reason, you f&%#ing morons, HELLO HELLO" Oh wait, I wasn't in Monterey that day - it must've been someone else.
Never mind....
