Long Trip...Advice??

So within the next year I am going to be making an 8 day trek from the San Francisco Area to Mexico. I was wondering if any of you had advice on riding on highways (specifically 101) and maybe route ideas. Thanks

You should post this in the Touring section...

Not sure if you reposted this or not so here's all I can tell you. I ran from San Francisco to Santa Barbara (which is where I use to live), and from home to Santa Monica, but avoided 101 as much as possible, and took Hwy 1 all the way to San Luis Obispo; this is far more scenic then 101 and in that stretch I'm not even sure if bikes are allowed. Then we got on the 101 at San Luis Obispo and took that to Arroyo Grande where the 1 again branches off the 101. The 1 then winds down through Lompoc then ends at Gaviota State Park and goes into the 101 again. Then just outside of Goleta (called Ellwood) you have to get off the 101 and take Hollister Ave.

Once your outside of Carpinteria you can take 101 again for a little ways but before you get to Ventura you have to get off again. But somewhere in Oxnard (can't recall exactly where) you can pick up the 1 again which will take you past Malibu and ends in Santa Monica

Your best bet is to get a map and map it. You cannot take 101 all the way to Mexico your going to have to ride on surface and side roads.

There is a place at: http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/index.cfm where you can buy a set of maps, for the the Pacific Coast, you would have to buy the sets you need for your trip. These maps were made exclusively for cyclist, they are already routed and are very good even showing sleep areas including camp sites and motels with phone numbers and bike shops with phone numbers; all profits from sales goes to the rail to trails program. They also follow hwy 1 as much as possible and bike paths whenever their available.

Honestly, just use http://www.sueandpaul.com/gmapPedometer/.

Move it anywhere in the country by zooming out and then back in. Its an awesome tool that I use on my 15 mile runs to set up new routes and my 100 mile rides just to keep it fresh. I've also used it to map out the triple-century I intend to do early next year.
