Actually, it depends on how high they set the sensitivity on the detector. I went through the detector ok at the Dallas/Ft Worth. When I returned from California, I set off the detector. I got the full pat down. They even swabbed my laptop for residue.

How much metal is in there? I have a knee replacement and it has set off every detector since 9-11. Prior to that it only set off the detector at the KCMO Federal Building on one occasion.

If you get "hit hard" then unclipping will be the least of your worries. This is a strange thread in my opinion.
