Bus Drivers
They aren't all bad...so I thought I'd let TriMet know about some of the good ones.
I sent this comment through our public transit's web site this morning:
I just want to compliment one of your drivers.
This morning, I was riding my bicycle on SW Barbur Blvd. toward downtown Portland. I was travelling quickly and I approached SW Hamilton and noticed a 56 bus nearing the intersection. Since I was going so fast and didn't recall seeing the bus pass me, I had no expectation that the bus driver knew I was approaching in the bike lane.
So, rather than risk being squeezed between the bus and the curb, I braked and held back behind the rear of the bus. Evidently, even though I came up quickly behind the bus, the driver must have seen me because the bus then came to a complete stop before the intersection, allowing me to pass by in the bike lane. Obviously, this driver is very aware and quite courteous.
I didn't catch the ID number, but the 56 bus was headed downtown and it was exactly 8:00 a.m. as I passed SW Hamilton @ Barbur. Tell the driver thanks, I appreciated the courtesy.

Good for you. We all tend to send complaints, but too few compliments. If your transit system is like ours, they can probably track down the driver from route #, time, and place.
I have sent a few compliments as well, including one for the bus driver who put up with my questions as I tried to identify the exact size and position of the bus' blind spot, and how far ahead of the bus I should be to make sure he can see me heading for the bike rack.
