police in FLA arrested after deliberately ramming bicyclist, then road raging him

Don't know many details, but my local news just ran a satellite feed of some florida police arrested after they deliberately ran down a bicyclist, then beat him senseless. It was caught on the cruiser cam. Any one with more info....

Seems like any time something like this happens, the victim is always classified as "drunk".

Just like when you are not drunk, except you tend to get more air and laugh when you fall.

Witnesses said a man was yelling obscenities, threatening workers and refusing to leave the restaurant, according to the arrest report
Let me guess (yes ... this is just a guess), the restaurant worker(s) refused to serve him because he was on a bike? Where have I heard that before?

I try not to jump to conclusions until I have seen evidence. I believe however, if they ran him down or clipped him that they were probably over the line unless there was some set of circumstances like him brandishing a weapon. I would just get in front of him and when he came by me, jerk him off the bike with my hands. Being in law enforcement this story relfects bad on all the good cops.

police running a biker down, then beating the guy with maglites is JUST WRONG.

it's police brutality, and it happens to people wether they are on bikes or not, unfortunately.

I used to ride in Pensacola when I was a kid too, it was a shirtless, shoeless bikeriding childhood. Seems we could go into the Kmart no prob....

anyway. These pigdogs deserve some punishment, and the 'policeman's benevolent's association' representative deserves a biatchslapping if he's defending these two low life patrolmen scum instead of making them issue a public apology. Benevolent, my burro!

At least an investigation is being conducted at the state level. This department sounds like something out of Sylvester Stallone movie.

In Florida, what does it take to disband a police department?

I remember a small town police department in MA being disbanded some years ago, on orders from then Governor William Weld, after a long investigation by the attorney general. The complaints ranged from motorists being pulled over and yelled at for no reason at all, to much more serious stuff, including beatings and racketeering. Regretfully, I do not have any links on this. Any long-time MA residents remember this? I think the town was South of Fitchburg.

quote from article:

"Craig's group also has recommended the firing of Deputy Mindy Vlack, 28, whose patrol car collided with the bicycle. McNesby issued her a letter of reprimand for failing to report the unusual details of the incident"

I'll bet Mindy drives an SUV when off duty... a BIG SUV

Speaking about high-speed bicycle chases, I was stopped on Highway 7 (Contestoga Pkwy in Kitchener) in South-Western Ontario because a truck driver had called the police on me. It all started in New Hamburg, just before Highway 7 turns into a limited-access 4-lane divided highway. I was riding through east-bound, while the trucker cut me off, so I passed him in the left-lane and sped up to match his speed so he couldn't pass me on the left (and I couldn't overtake him to return to the right-lane). Anyways, maybe 15 km or so later in Kitchener, the police had two squad cars, one pulled me over and the other guarded the exit ramp (to make sure I wouldn't continue on my merry way). The police were nice enough and suggested a route through the city instead, which I grudgingly took. But it was loads of fun in the tailwind as I must've been doing 50-70 km/hr (my cyclocomputer wasn't working that day unfortunately), and this was one event of many in my 9 hour trip from London to Newmarket.

From what I read, this story is much more about police treatment of drunks than about police treatment of bicyclists. People tend to say and do stupid things when drunk and frequently act out of control. They are often a threat to others. I have no sympathy whatsoever for drunks, but in the interest of justice, I do support the higher-level investigation.

If some of you are not familiar with Pensacola – it’s on the panhandle and has more in common with South Georgia than, say, Miami.

From the newspaper article:

“Deputies reported that Springman was intoxicated. He was carrying a bottle of Evan Williams whiskey in the basket of his bicycle.” (emphasis added)

Think that might be a clue?
