as to the bicyclist 'correctly taken the lane' and 'is moving into the BL' that's all pretty much speculation, isn't it? I just see a bicyclist on the outside of a perfectly good bike lane.

BTW I am not trying to show a cyclist "taking the lane," this cyclist was just outside the lane at that point.
The point I am trying to make is that while in some areas we may have nice bike lanes... the edge of the road can obscure part of the bike lane and make it narrower. Also the bike lanes in France used dashed lines vice our solid lines.

BTW in answer to Dianes original post... I'd probably ride just to the right of the stripe in the road shown... it looks like it might be a quiet area and that pavement looks pretty darn smooth to me.
By showing the BL in France as a contrast, I am only trying to point out the limitations of our BLs here... such as the issue of the BL becoming too narrow as debris from the right obscures some of the lane... a common problem.
Oh and for Bek... this was not a google pic... it is one of hundreds I took when visiting France last August. I am a cyclist, so I took pics of the roadways and bike lanes... sadly I did not bike there. The roads were in fantastic condition. My wife took pics of buildings and Paris cafe chairs...
But back to Diane's original post... I have biked in SB and found the area wonderful for cycling. Far more inviting then the areas south... where car culture rules. Although there is this one spot just north of Malibu where a whole wide road is a bike lane right along the ocean... sure, part of it does become obscured by sand, but the thing is something like 25-30 feet wide and just outstanding. Hiway 101/1 runs alongside to the left of that two way bike lane.

nice pics of French cycling facilities, Gene.
although I'd like to stay focused on Diane's posted pics, gene, your second pic of the franco bike lane is telling:
there was a narrower, solid striped line replaced with the wider broken line, and the broken line to the right of the bikers looks like a shoulder demarcation for the benefits of the cyclist, giving cyclists lines on both sides of the aisle. Very nice.
the 'fog line' was replaced with a broken, wider, bicycle facilities lane marking.
In Genes' pics, just like Diane's picture post, I'd be riding to the right of the line, and keeping footloose and swervy as needed.

Sorry for the confusion. It's NOT a fog line. It's a bike lane. The whole road widening project was just for putting the bike lane in and fixing some bridges.
Before that all there was was a fog line, and it was about 6 inches to 0 inches from the edge of the road. The road was narrower, too. They basically carved a bit more out from the bushes to the right, leaving a very small strip for "landscaping." In my opinion it's not one of the better implementations of a bike lane in Santa Barbara. And it's noisy next to the freeway. I'm glad it's there, though, because the road is due east/west, and I travel into the sun both ways.
By the way, some people prefer the freeway so that they can avoid Ortega Hill Road.
