From San Francisco Craigslist:

Hit and Run Please Read

Hello all,

Hope everyone had a great holiday.

I wanted to let you know about a shocking revelation/development in the case we learned on Saturday. Our friend Spider was taken off the sedatives the other day and since he was feeling more lucid, people started asking him more questions so we could get some answers about what really happened last week. It is shocking and an outrage: it ends up it was not a hit and runit was intentional assault. Spider was at the 20th and Florida intersection on the phone with Moses,
standing by his bike, when an SUV (believed to be a black Cadillac Escalade) was driving erratically and aggressively in the street. Spider yelled out, Nice way to drive your SUV when it passed, and the driver then stopped the car. Heres the absolutely chilling part: the cold-blooded mother f**ker then put the vehicle in reverse and accelerated into Spider. Thus far we are estimating the car was 15-20 feet away. He didnt move because he thought they were just trying to scare him, and wouldnt actually hit him. We now sadly know differently.

We dont know much about the identity of the driver and the passenger thus far (we believe there were two people in the SUV). The little detail we know is they might be white or Hispanic. Messages have been left for the police, and we are hoping we can get him them in to interview Spider ASAP. He is lucid, clear, and will be taken out of the ICU ward and into the surgical floor. (A nice Christmas gift, that.)

Someone extremely generous has offered to put up a reward: it makes me wonder if a reward might inspire the passenger to turn the driver in, or perhaps one of their thug friends who heard/know what happened would turn them in.

This will certainly be a media-worthy story I will ask the Inspector to re-approach the Public Affairs office with this, and we can start our own media outreach. There has also been talk about approaching body shops and letting them know about this, but its also hard to imagine the SUV has much damage to its rear-end... Well see what the Inspector thinks. We are all stunned at the violence and aggression of this total sociopath.

Shocking, disgusting, horrifying.

But here's some good news: He's starting to drink clear liquids. He can't drink much and it's a slow, concentrated effort, but it's a start. The doctors removed the stitches under his eyes and continue to marvel at his rapid progress. So much of the staff has grown fond of Spider. After 8 pm, they come by, talk about bicycles, Burning Man, music, etc. They even gave him a nice SF General t-shirt tonight. I think it was a graduation gift. He has orders to transfer out of ICU, but there weren't any beds available. He should transfer out soon.

What the hell is wrong with society in general? Have we as a nation (world?) gotten more rude to each other over the years to the point where murdering someone else isn't that big of a deal? For you older people here, has this happened in decades or years?

I hope Spider ends up recovering fully.
I'm not surprised in the least. I AM surprised that so many others are, though.

There is a shifting baseline of what is permissable in traffic. I'm only 33 so I can't speak too much about how things have changed over the past 20 years on the road. I do know this: Frontline had a show about the advertising industry. This show had a segment on an advertising guru which executives pay big $ to hear. This guru observed that people began to use their SUV's to intimidate other drivers back when they increased in popularity in the 90's. So he extrapolated that automakers should make SUV's even larger, and more "intimidating," to market to those insecure, nut-job drivers. Some execs took his advice to heart and built bigger SUV's. In my humble opinion, I think that a more aggressive car culture emerged when the SUV began to predominate. I was just beginning to ride around '98, and I'd hear my car bound friends complain about SUV's doing things like riding on their bumpers with their high beams on to send the message that they weren't going fast enough and otherwise wielding their car more like a weapon. Also, there are more cars on the road, necessitating a more aggressive driving style. I think another thing which factors into it, is that these people have no life- they aren't happy- and how can you be happy shoveling tons of money into a metal contraption which gives little back. A metal contraption which advertisers lured you into believing would bring freedom and happiness- when all you get is stuck in gridlock. A car is boring to drive. That's why people have to have gadgets to play with while driving. When I'm biking I feel alive. When I'm driving I feel bored and even irritable. The stupid things that other drivers do piss me off much more when I'm in the car than when I'm on the bike.

As someone riding in SF I obviously have followed this story, but I have not heard of this development until now. Can't really say I am surprised, but I will also say that I think it's a good idea not to taunt asses in large SUVs.

What was spider doing, auditioning for a Darwin award?. I mean come on! You see some crazy azz fool in a suv driving erractically. You are standing on the corner armed with a 20 lb bike and a cell phone and you are going to yell out "Nice way to drive your SUV a--hole!" (which is likely what he really said) and then when the nut cames at you with a 4500 lb SUV you stand your ground? That is so stupid!

Don't get me wrong The a-hole in the SUV
should get 20 years with a cell mate named Bubba and no vasoline.
I hope Spider recovers and rides again, and when he does recover give him a great big pimp slap for being stupid!

Not at all to excuse the homicidal reject in the SUV but something to always remember - if someone has a weapon - keep your mouth closed. They may just be unbalanced enough to use it.

Some people don't believe the argument is over until they become violent.

Is spider expected to make a full recovery? Or at least enough of a recovery to ride bike again? I hope so.

I do think it was a bad idea for spider to have said what he did, which ended up getting him hurt. But that does not excuse their behavior.

When spider is out of the hospital I vote we all chip in & buy him a Oregon Scientific ATC-1000 action camera. If he had one when this happened it might have recorded the make, model & liscense plate of the SUV. Which would help with catching the arse holes who did this. I'll chip in a few bucks for a atc-1000 for spider. If we do this we can figure out the details on who will order it & from where, etc. Will anyone else?

I'm going to do an experiment and find out if the ATC-1000 writes constantly to the flash card, and if it preallocates the space; in other words, if the power gets cut suddenly while it's recording, does it get the last few seconds before it gets whacked? Normal running out of juice doesn't prove anything, since it shuts itself down.

I've thought about this in the few days I've been using it; if I get hit, will the camera record up to the point where it takes the hit? If not, will data recovery and AVI header reconstruction fix it?

If I find out I'll post results.

Even if the atc-1000 does not record for the few seconds after impact it can still record right up until the time of. Which means the potential for getting the liscense plate number is greater if a person has one of these.

How are you going to experiment? Are you going to sacrifice a camera to this project?

It might NOT record up to the first few seconds before impact. It's writing to a flash card, it may not be flushing its data to the card constantly. Also, the AVI file format writes the file's index information at the END of the file; if it doesn't get a chance to properly close the file, the data may be there, but it may need to be run through an AVI utility to reconstruct the video. Also, since it's an embedded processor, there's no guarantee that it's preallocating the data space in the file allocation table before writing - a computer would look in the FAT for free space, then claim the space for the file, then go write to that space; it has to because it's multitasking and if it didn't other programs might try to write to the same space at the same time. The camera doesn't have to worry about that so it could look for space, write to it, then only later go and claim the space. Depends on the optimizations the firmware authors decided to use. If it does that, then a data recovery would have to be done on the card, in addition to the AVI reconstruction.

I plan to just yank the batteries out while it's filming and see what happens.

Is this sort of message also considered just another version/method of bicycling advocacy from the counter culture/lunatic/drop-out crowd? I doubt that even those guys, if not spaced out junkies, will embrace the above "advocacy."
Who is supposed to be influenced by such rants in a positive way towards bicycling or bicylists?

Well ......... if that's how you feel, do us a favor and ........ move to Iraq. Maybe you could volunteer your services as say .......... a suicide bomber????

As for the rest of this discussion: I sure hope Spider comes out of this OK. At the same time, I hope he and anybody else reading this thread learns a little something from it.

1. You don't bring a knife to a gun fight ....... OR a bike to a car fight.

2. If you're out numbered, (knife vs gun - car vs bike) or otherwise not prepared to defend yourself, maybe keeping your mouth shut is a prudent choice. When you ask for a beatin', there are a lot of folks out there that will be happy to give you one and fighting fair isn't necessarilly high on their list of priorities.

This does not mean btw that I condone the SUV drivers actions.

Oh great, just what I wanted to read.

Today I went out for my FIRST ride since getting mowed down in August by a hit and run driver (followed by two weeks in the hospital and three months off work). I took out the MTB and rode 100 ft to the four way stop sign at the corner. I stopped, put my foot down and looked. One car comming from my left, so I proceeded. Did he stop for his stop sign? Nope, he slowed and rolled through thinking I'd just keep going. Sorry ... this is my first ride since being left for dead by a #^%@*$#!!! driver back in August, so I guess I have a lot of pent up anger yet. I stopped in the middle of the intersection and pointed my finger (index) at him and YELLED ... " S T O P !!! ". He kept creeping up. My inner soul then opened up with the longest and loudest string of profanity I have ever uttered with as many F, MF, GD, SOB phrases I could get my lungs to yell. I guess it took the sight of a 6'5" 250lb guy dressed in Adidas warmups yelling at him at full volume to get him to stop for his stop sign. If he would have gotten out of his car I would have tossed the bike and held my ground ... I was *PISSED*!

After 5 months off, I ride 100 ft and I'm having driver trouble already. Oh, it's going to be an interesting year.

jw
(oh, I lasted 10 minutes before the pelvic bones that had been broken ached too much, then I went back home)
