Funds from both the SHARE THE ROAD plate (the full $25 of the annual fee) and NASCAR plates ($14.75 of the annual fee) will be directed to the Governor’s Office Of Highway Safety for use in motorist and cyclist safety, education, and awareness projects and programs.

I never thought I would see the day...

Cool. Great idea. I did a bit of research and found that in PA, there are 128 "specialty plates". And the closest to bike related is this rails to trails plate.

Any idea what the Governor's Office of Highway Safety actually thinks about cyclist safety?
I've heard that some states, given money to improve cyclist safety, build recreational paths that are useless for transportation, or other things that don't help cyclists on the road.
Still, pretty cool. I wouldn't mind having one here.

Thanks, Map tester. I think I'll get one just for the message it gives to motorists behind me when I drive (or when my wife drives.)

For about three years they gave grants to one of the local bicycle advocacy groups. I'll see if I can find where they spend the money.

Why does the bike plate cost more than the NASCAR plate?

[edit] wait - maybe they cost the same and a larger portion of the fee goes to highway safety? and isn't it weird that NASCAR plates would fund highway safety?

NC just passed theirs and mine should be here in about 2-3 months.........! About time for us as well.

Those are cheap. SC's plate is $58 per year, regular tag fee is $12.50. Not to mention the punitive property tax the county puts on your car that you MUST pay before renewing the registration.
