Falling is one thing. Falling into traffic is something else.

This is my main concern about bike lanes. A small stripe is no comfort when the lane itself is littered with debris.

As the Government cannot fix all potholes and cracks, nor sweep and maintain every bike lane (this is, of course, a muse) a cyclist must know his route well and be alert.

Here’s a good one.

I was recently on the Keystone Ride with 800 other cyclists. There were 20 state cops on motorcycles who stopped traffic and warned us of dangers ahead.

One particular RR crossing was at an angle to the road (not perpendicular) and a bit rough. A motorcycle cop went up ahead, parked his big Harley just past the tracks, right on the road dividing line and turned all his lights on as a warning. In spite of all the precautions, one cyclist had a pretty bad spill there. I assumed that his wheal got caught in the tracks, but at the next rest stop I found out the truth. The guy made it over the tracks just fine but he was so intent on watching the tracks that he failed to look up in time and ran smack into the parked Harley, sending them both flying.
