Otherwise known as "Sunday River to the Sea", The Trek Across Maine is a 3-day, 183-mile bicycle trek which raises money for the American Lung Association of Maine. Each trekker must have raised $450 in order to participate. This year it is held on June 16-18. Although there is a trek in every state, this one has been noted to be the most beautiful. All along the way, there is support staff in charge of rest stops with food and water, mechanics, paramedics, police, trucks for baggage, and buses for cyclists who might need a ride.
It starts in the Western Maine town of Bethel at the Sunday River Ski Resort. However, there are stops for the night in Farmington at the University of Maine campus the first night and Colby College in Waterville the second night. On the last day, Trekkers proceed to the coastal town of Owls Head where the trek ends at the Maine Transportation Museum.
Although there are many cyclists who ride competitively, THE TREK IS NOT A RACE.
I've ridden the trek a number of times. Its a good way to meet people, a great ride, and a way to experience something new. For those of you who may not have done it before, contact the American Lung Association of Maine at 1-800-499-5864 for more information.
So I'll be in Bethel on June 16th. Who else is going?
