I am very suprised that RAGBRAI doen't require hemets. If your goal is to get folks to wear helmets, then focus on this, don't divert your objective. Organ donation is a very serious issue, don't push people away by singling them out because they choose not to wear a helmet. Additionally, there a TON of potential organ donors out there WITH helmets on that could use a reminder about organ donation. Lastly, are you SURE that organs donated in Iowa STAY in Iowa? I don't think it works that way.

The word supercillious comes to mind.
I'm betting calling people idiots really does a lot to educate them on the benefits of wearing a helmet.

With people like you running things I'm in no hurry to sign up for RAGBRAI.
After buying my first helmet in the late '70s and wearing them consistently ever since, I've learned that they really don't do a whole lot to protect the brain in a serious accident.
Wear a helmet if you want to (I still do, I just don't expect it to be a magic shield against every form of head injury), but please don't ram your opinions down my throat.

RAGBRAI might require helmets, but you get so many one day riders, and there are just so many riders, it's a hard thing to enforce. So, you sign the waiver and you go. If you crash and die without a helmet, the organizers are covered either the waiver, or that you weren't a participant. Again, Iowa doesn't have a helmet law, because people in Iowa for the most part have common sense, and the rest follow darwin.

I have no problems with helmet requirements, but it's sad that someone who has organ donor cards on hand and the opportunity to distribute them doesn't give them to everyone. I'd be surprised if more people weren't dying from lack of transplant organs than die from not wearing a helmet.
If someone in my family needed an organ, I'd be happy to take one from someone who was wearing a helmet as well.

Why would someone who's thinking of donating organs care if they stayed in state? That seems idiotic. If someone needs my organs when I'm dead, I don't want them denied because they're across some imaginary line. Hell, I don't even care if they're in the U.S., I only care that they need help.

Handing the "death organ" card to the helmetless riders will only serve to alientate them from wearing a helmet. If they're adults they have a right to go helmetless and ride officials should respect that choice. If they become injured by not wearing the helmet they reap what they've sown. Such is the nature of choice. Now if organ donation is the big push, then have a way of distributing them to all equally. Why would you get your message to only part of the audience?

Nut_Cases with access to keyboards are normally pretty harmless, but that bit from N_C about "firm hand", "whooping ass" and "bratty kids" in combination with his apparant megalomania caused some movement on the "Nut_Case to keep under observation" meter.

Sounds like an agenda beyond organ donation to me. I always wear a helmet and advocate their use, but to miss that big of an audience with the donor cards seems more helmet related than organ donor related.

Most riders on RAGBRAI indeed wear helments. There are a few 1-2% that don't. There is an incredible amount of peer presure to wear helments. There is no actual way to mandate helment useage as public roads are used for RAGBRAI.
I for one use a helment, but I would be pissed if someone pushed a donor card on me for not wearing one.

These tactics are, at best, ineffective. Everyone has heard all the arguments for and against helmet use and everyone makes their own decisions. Maybe you should hand the organ donor cards to bent riders since they are less visible to motorists and might be more likely to be run down from behind (where survival rates are very low regardless of helmet usage) or to overwieight riders since they may be more likely to succumb to heatstroke or heart attack during a long hot ride.

If most accidents happen in the home will I get an organ card if I don't wear a crash helmet in the living room?
