Shimano Quick Release Recall
I just found this on Shimano's website. It appears that my road bike may be effected. Perhaps yours is too. https://bike.shimano.com/publish/cont...k_release.html

You make a good point. Funny how I start a thread on a potentially deadly component that might be on many people's bikes and nobody replies. Yet you can start a thread about Walmart bikes and everybody has something to say.
It looks like anybody that bought any of these effected hubs after November of last year is a potential victim. I bought a new pair of wheels this Spring with Ultegra hubs that looks to be effected. I am contacting Shimano as we speak.

"In certain cases, the [part] could fail or break spontaneously."

All my QRs are Shimano! Luckily all my QR skewers are more than 3 years old
Companies are much more willing to issue recalls when Wal-Mart, the company with the most purchasing power of them all, isn't breathing down their neck.

I called Shimano and told them that i had one of the effected hubs. The guy there told me to go to my lbs and get a replacement. Why would i go to my LBS to get a replacement? I didn't even buy the wheels there. Dillweed!!!!
I'm gonna call them back and demand that they send me one. I talked to my LBS owner and he said that shimano was real bad about doing crap like that.

There are many parts on those crappy x-mart bikes bearing the shimano name. I don't see the difference....except that x-marts & their suppliers have been shown to hide the number of injuries reported to avoid recalls and fiscal responsobility for recalled products, refused to participate in voluntary recalls, dragging their heels for much, much longer than the mere 6 months that passed between the manufacture, defect discovery & voluntary recall that is the case with Shimano & this QR.

What hidden info? Goto https://www.cpsc.gov & look around. X-mart & company tends to keep products that are eventually recalled on the shelves until they are sold out, then a year or 2 later they have the good grace to allow a recall that no one will see. 13,000 QR on Adult bicycles recalled immediately vs 250,000 childrens bikes recalled 2 years after they were sold out.

I just don't get either side of this argument. I, like many other people here, didn't start off riding high-end bikes. I started off on a department store bike. I know first-hand the severe limitations they imposed on serious cycling. But I rode the thing anyways, and stuff broke.
Eventually I migrated further up the price scale to stuff sold by specialty retailers.
And as this recall reminds us, XT and ultegra stuff still breaks. Except that I find it breaks after 400 hours of use, instead of 40 or 4 like on the low-pricepoint bikes I used to ride.
I would be inclined to suggest that a low-end bike from a bike shop would be a pretty small step up from a department store bike. But I agree with the earlier posts that things breaking early on high-end bikes is a cause for a recall or at least a refund, whereas on a department store bike it is more of a given.

What I did find after a cursory look around on the CPSC site was:
Specialized Bicycle Components Inc. Recalls Bicycles Due to Fall Hazard
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of Product: Bicycles with SW Carbon Stem with Magnesium Faceplate
Units: About 2,700
Manufacturer: Specialized Bicycle Components Inc., of Morgan Hill, Calif.
Hazard: The bicycle’s stem has a magnesium faceplate that holds the handlebar in place. The faceplates on the recalled stems can crack allowing the handlebar to break off the bicycle, posing a serious fall hazard.
Incidents/Injuries: Specialized has received five reports of the magnesium faceplate exhibiting cracks. No injuries have been reported.
Description and Models: The SW Carbon Stem with Magnesium Faceplate is black with the words “S-Works” and “Magnesium Faceplate” printed on it. The stems were included as original equipment on the following 2006 bicycles models: S-Works Tarmac, Tarmac Pro, S-Works Roubaix, Roubaix Pro, Allez Pro and S-Works Transition. It was also sold as an after market item under the name S-Works Advanced Composite Mag Road Stem.
Sold at: Authorized Specialized retailers from June 2005 through April 2006 as original equipment of the bicycle models referenced above or as an after market item for about $160.
Manufactured In: Taiwan
Remedy: Consumers should stop riding the bicycles that have the recalled stems immediately and take them to an authorized Specialized retailer for a free replacement faceplate.
Consumer Contact: For additional information, call Specialized at (877) 808-8154 between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. MT, Monday through Friday, or visit the company’s Web site at www.Specialized.com

Is that all you found? I found hundreds of recalls regarding both "LBS" bikes and x-mart bikes as well.
You know ILTB, an attack on poorly made goods isn't an attack on the American way. If you want to find the information you think is hidden then just look. Read depositions from related lawsuits, witness accounts, employee statements on retailer accountability practices, any number of readily available documents pertaining to the subject. But do your own damn homework. If I wanted to write a paper and include a bibliography and footnotes for every post on this forum I'dve been an english major. If you can't get information that has been cited here on bikeforums numerous times or use a search engine well enough to locate these things for yourself then what the hell good are you anyway?
If you're angry over the fact that a shimano recall, or any other recall, doesn't mean a damn thing in your quest to sit things right with Wal-mart and yourself, I'm sorry. I apologize for your bullheadedness.

You made the claim, "X-mart & company tends to keep products that are eventually recalled on the shelves until they are sold out, then a year or 2 later they have the good grace to allow a recall that no one will see." What makes you say so? A tort case allegation? Internet jabber you read somewhere on BF or elsewhere? Or did you make up this claim all by yourself?

ILTB, don't hijack the thread. Portis wanted to notify us about a recall, and he did. We're thanking him for it and discussing other recalls and safety issues. You don't need to jump up and start attacking everybody...don't be such a ... yeah.
