Cyclist killed by DUI driver
I was surprised to learn yesterday that a 33-year old male cyclist was killed last Tuesday by a intoxicated 23-year old female driver on the coast route between Dana Point and San Clemente. I was told about about 1-2 minutes before driving by the very spot. As a cyclist, you would have felt very safe there except that it was at 9:30 p.m.

I've seen drivers pull over along that stretch and puke along the side of the road during the daytime hours. Drunken bastards take the coast because they're afraid of getting popped on the fwy and now a poor cyclist pays the price for that kind of thoughtless negligence. A couple of women joggers paid the price in the same area just weeks ago.

This sickens me to no end.
When I was a youngster one of the best junior racers of our day, Mike Walters, was hit by a drunk while on a training ride. The result, Mike was a quadraplegic.
The death penalty is too mild for these drunk drivers.

Huuu I would simply torture this kind of people or simply cut thei legs and arms so they won't drive again and they will feel what the biking community feels wen a cyclist die

Damn, I always hate to hear this kind of thing. Condolences to Mr. Thompson's family and friends, and I trust that the local cycling community will make sure he's remembered, and find ways to change things for the better in his name.
By the way, one thing that I (grudgingly) think should be mentioned about Ms. Booth, the drunk driver who killed him. From the LA times report, it sounds like there were no witnesses to the crash, so she could have tried to run and hide, like William Bradshaw did when he hit two runners in that same spot in April. Instead, she was giving first aid when the police arrived. This doesn't excuse her crime for a nanosecond, but in my mind it does move her from the category of "contemptible worm who never should have been born" to that of "person who committed a terrible crime and needs to repent in prison for a very long time."

Are any OC-based BF members available to monitor Ms. Booth's case? We can only hope that she gets a judge who has lost a family member or a friend to a drunk driver.

It's like they make all these laws, and somehow people get around them.
What kills me is how intoxicated drivers get busted one week and kill someone the next.
It's like this, you will never convince 80% of drivers that they could ride a bike to work, play or store, better yet to the bar.
And worse yet, when someone is killed on a bike, all they can say is "Don't ride".

Whether she tried to render aid makes no differance in my book. I have nothing but hate & contempt for anyone who drinks & drives. I despise them to no end. To me they are lower then the lowest life forms. They should be put to death when they kill another person because they drank & drove. Lethal injection is too kind. They should die the same way they killed their victims.
In this case since it was a cyclist that was hit & killed, then this ***** Booth should be tied to a bike & hit by a motor vehicle until she is dead.
Let me put it another way. If a drunk driver ever hurt or killed anyone in my family & they were caught & sent to jail or prison they would not leave alive or they would leave maimed for life depending on what they did to my family member. I would make sure of it. With enough money anyone can be bought to either maime or kill someone else in prison. The ******* or ***** may not even make it through the court trial process.
I hope this is clear enough on how I feel about drunk drivers.

Public safety is the issue. Motorists are capable of significantly more harm than bicyclists ever will be capable of.
