Tell the police he opened the glove box to pull a weapon on you. They'll do something.

Now I know why I lost all interest in women at the beginning of the year, I bought a bike and started riding again!

ROFLMAO. He's clearly got dementia and needs to lose his license.

He kept interrupting me, saying that it was pointless to fill out a report... I never got to the part where he reached for his glove box....... =(

I did not (and will not) ask the officer for the guys name and address.

Also, it is possible (yet very unlikely) that they lent the car to someone else and it was not the actual owners driving when this happened....

Anyway, I think I'll just store this one in the " lessons learned " box and be better prepared next time it happens to me.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in with ideas and help =)

I wouldn't advocate lying to the police. We have no idea of what he was or was not reaching for, since no weapon was seen. Lying to a police officer isn't necessarily a crime, but filing a false police report is.

Like Ford, I am a Florida resident, and I can tell you that there isn't much hope of proactively removing a senior citizen's driving privileges down here. 28 million people live in Florida. 27 million of them are over the age of 75 but still make it to the polls on election day. Do the math.

(I have no idea of the actual elderly population of the state-numbers are for purposes of sarcasm only)

Yea, he may have been reaching for a camera.

... and only about 1/4 of them are coherent enough to actually figure out the ballots or operate the polling machines.

A black toyota matrix approaches the intersection in the same direction I am going and blows the stop sign completely, doesn't even tap the brakes.

I catch him 3 blocks ahead at a major intersection (red light, he was in left turning lane just like I was). The driver appears to be a senior citizen ,with a very elderly looking wife in the passenger seat ( this is a mostly senior-only area that I was in, Hallandale Beach Florida).
So what exactly is the point of confronting this person? From the sounds of your post, you weren't endangered. I had one old person pass me within a couple of inches and smacked her car as she went by. I thought about having words with her at the grocery store parking lot but I figured it wasn't worth frightening the old lady half to death. The smack on the car was enough and I don't figure it is worthwhile confronting and scaring someone unnecessarily. This is particularly true in places where people routinely pack heat and might shoot first and ask questions later. Let it go....

I too wonder what your purpose was in confronting this motorist. Him blowing that stop sign, from a legal perspective (and that is the only one that people on this forum pay any attention too - since we all know that breaking the law on a bike is just fine) is in actual fact no different than a cyclist doing it. From a safety perspective, both are dead wrong, or will be soon (Darwin will sort the dangerous cyclist and the dangerous car driver). From an advocacy perspective, this whole thread is irrelevant. Also, you are not a police officer, and have no business in confronting someone over how they drive UNLESS THEY ALMOST HIT YOU WHICH THEY DIDNT DO.

I'll reply to the above quotes with another quote...

Why is it not acceptable to open up a reasonable, peaceful dialog with another human being? Should I live in fear of talking to people because one of them might be upset by what I say? If that is the case, then every person should have their vocal chords removed at birth because then we could have a more peaceful planet.

If you expect rational discourse from someone after you have criticised their driving, you are apparently living on a different planet. I attempt to discuss problems with drivers in a reasonable and civilised manner ONLY when something was done that endangered me personally. Unfortunately, the discussion rarely stays civilised regardless of how calm and polite I am. It is not my job to correct everyone else's behaviour. In the same way, I don't lecture other cyclists about wearing helmets, not running stop signs or generally being squirrels UNLESS they do something that endangers me or those I am with.

Because its based on the assumption that you're addressing a reasonable human being, the trouble there is that they just drove in a beligerent manner that endangered your life.

If you want to open up a reasonable, peaceful dialog with another human being talk to the motorist that slowed down and waited untill its safe to pass you, then passed at a safe distance.

Form a protest & a parade with other cyclists on your bikes in front of his house on the public road because of the way he drives. This is all legal provided you follow the guidelines for doing so & no harm can come to this person as a result. It is not stalking, it is a concerned citizen taking action against a bad driver legally.
ROFLMAO!
