Help making a bike safety flyer for cagers in my community

I want to make a 1 page flyer, something I can post up at the community center here in my neighborhood.

I want people to know about the 3 foot safe passing law in florida.
I want them to know about the legality of bicycles using the road.

I would like to add an image showing the car passing the bike giving a 3 foot gap (not including a bike lane).

HELP ? Suggestions ?

The League of Illinois Bicyclists have a PDF document online that can be tucked into a wallet. It may not be large enough to post, but if copies of wallet-sized Florida ROTR exerpts were placed in pockets integrated with the poster then people could take copies with them.

It's not the law in Georgia - YET, but the Governor's Office of Highway Safety paid to have these printed.

I think this is the way to go. Its simple, easy to understand, and it tells motorists in a non-confrontational way that bicycles belong on the street.

Anything else will likely piss off a population that already hates us and thinks we don't shouldn't be on the road.

Maybe a kid on the bike instead of an adult to appeal to peoples sense of safety for kids? Most people have kids in their lives and are protective of them so if we drive the point home that giving way to a cyclist will encourage drivers to drive safely around their kids, this might help.

If they aren't already printed, any way you could get "use part of the oncoming lane to make the pass" to "change lanes to pass, using the oncoming lane where necessary"? There's no reason to encourage the bare minimum (3 feet) when a motorist could easily give 8 feet by putting in a little more "effort."

Otherwise, it looks great. Good job, Georgia.

+1 for the ideas posted here. I would use them as examples & combine the ideas to produce something for your area. However, I would not put the word cagers on what ever you produce fordfaster.

No, no. Do use the word cager repeatedly. Make sure you act superior when you're handing out the "helpful" flyers. It's even better if you're wearing full kit when you do it. That'll be really effective. I always wonder about people that are trying to "advocate" that use the word cager.

I think the atlantabike.org flyer is great. I particularly like that they show the cyclist riding slightly away from the edge of the road. Although I wish they would say 'allow' instead of 'give.'

Appears to be just about right tire track position. Pretty good for something the state plans on printing. I also appreciate the mention of "ride no more than two abreast" without the qualifier of "unless it impedes traffic." 2 cyclists riding abreasts impedes no more traffic than a single slow moving vehicle yet some people really take offense to riding like this in a narrow lane. Obviously bugs me a bit.

The Atlanta flyer is fine, but I wanted to point out a nit:

Why is the driver not passing with more distance? Why are they cutting back into lane so soon? There is no vehicle coming the other way. This is typcial inconsiderate agressive motorist behavior.

I know why, because the static graphic needs to illustrate a passing maneuver, but the reality is that many drivers don't give more than 3ft when then easily could and should. 3ft is fine with traffic passing at up to 40-45mph, but it is tedious if not dangerous when cars pass with only 3ft of space while they are traveling at 55mph+ and swerve back close ahead as they are passing.

Hence my post #6. A subtle change in wording, in my opinion, makes 3 feet sound like the absolute minimum and the ideal situation is a complete lane change.

I know it's the minimum acceptable, but 3 feet is not much.

Many of the cyclists on this forum that complain about being buzzed by cars?

I'll be they were passed ">3 ft."

Try here. The picture of the card is rather hard to read, sorry about that. When I saw them in person, they were fine.
