The stretch of St. George street that runs through the University of Toronto between Harbord and College is an example of an attempt to go with less regulation (I know- they do have lights and 'implied lines), which I think was a reaction to the fact that some tens of thousands of students jaywalk across that street several times a day - hundreds of times more pedestrians and jaywalkers than cars. It works pretty well - but don't go bombing down that street on a bike or a car, because you're likely to whack into dozens of peds (if not hundreds between the hour and ten minutes past the hour).
