Yet another cyclist involved in a "fender bender" that won't make the "death statistics," but downs the cyclist none the less.

The original article talks about the driver being Walter Sorenson. I wonder if that is the Walter Sorenson who owns or controls about 50% of the commerical office space in the Bay Area? The age and location sound right. Anybody know?

This has been a topic on local bike coalition email lists. The papers have been reporting it as a brutal attack for which the drunk driver is clearly at fault. Her wounds are severe, and being reported as such; part of her heel was ripped off, and she had to have a tracheotomy, for starters.

Scoring 0.081 on the breathalyzer (which the driver scored when he was pulled over) means you're just barely legally drunk, and being legally drunk is a far cry from being so drunk that you don't know what's going on. He must have known he had hit her, and was dragging her, while it was happening. And then he tried to drive away, and would have gotten away if another car hadn't physically blocked him. What a bastard.

(EDIT: fixed the breathalyzer number - it used to say 0.81. Which would kill a horse.)
